lit candle in a kitchen

Have you ever lit your favorite scented candle, expecting your room to fill with that delicious aroma, only to realize you can’t smell a thing while everyone else around you raves about it? You're not alone. This is a question we have frequently seen asked online.

Whether you’re burning a handmade 3-wick jar candle, a scented pillar, or even a cute little votive, there are several reasons why you might not smell the scent while others can, and it doesn’t necessarily mean the candle is bad.

Let’s dive into why this happens and what you can do about it.

What Is Nose Blindness?

The most likely culprit? Nose blindness, also known as olfactory fatigue.

When you're exposed to a scent for an extended period, your brain stops registering it to free up focus for new stimuli. It's a protective feature of our nervous system, but not so helpful when you're trying to enjoy your favorite candle.

How it works:

  • You light a candle and immediately notice the scent.
  • After about 15–30 minutes, your brain adjusts and tunes it out.
  • Meanwhile, a friend walking in from outside will smell it right away.

A perfect example of this is when you cook fish for dinner and, after a while, don't notice the smell anymore, but someone else walking into your home knows instantly what you cooked.

Tip: Leave the room for a while, then come back. If the scent suddenly hits you again, nose blindness is the issue.

Room Size and Airflow Matter

If you’re burning a candle in a large or open-concept room, the fragrance might dissipate too quickly to build up a strong scent. On the other hand, in a very small space, the scent might get overwhelming, or feel like it vanishes as your nose adjusts.

Consider this:

  • A large candle (like a 3-wick 64 oz jar) works better in open or high-ceiling spaces.
  • A small jar candle or votive is ideal for bedrooms or bathrooms.

To improve scent throw:

  • Try burning the candle near the center of the room, not near open windows or vents.
  • Close doors to keep the fragrance contained.

Cold Throw vs. Hot Throw

Two important terms in the candle world are:

  • Cold Throw: How a candle smells before it's lit.
  • Hot Throw: How a candle smells while it's burning.

It’s possible to love the cold throw and be disappointed by the hot throw if the wick, wax, or fragrance oil isn’t balanced well.

At Keystone Candle, we hand-pour our scented jar candles using high-quality fragrance oils and tested wick combinations to ensure a strong hot throw.

Are You Using the Right Candle for Your Space?

Using the wrong candle for your environment could be why you’re not picking up much scent. Some candles are made to fill large spaces, others are meant for smaller areas.

Candle Size Best For
Votive / 7 oz jar Small bathrooms, desks
16 oz jar candle Bedrooms, kitchens
64 oz 3-wick jar Living rooms, open floor plans

Surface area is king; the wider the liquid wax pool, the stronger the candle will smell.  Pouring the same batch of candle wax into a tall, narrow container and a short, wide container will yield different results when it comes to the scent strength.  The wider candle will have more of the liquid wax exposed to the air, so more fragrance will be evaporating at a time, making it much more noticeable.

Want to boost scent? Burn two candles at opposite ends of a larger room to double the throw.

Tips to Make Your Candle Smell Stronger

If you're struggling to smell your candle, here are some helpful tricks:

  • Trim the wick before each burn (about 1/4”)
  • Let the wax pool reach the edges of the jar before extinguishing
  • Keep the candle away from drafts or open windows
  • Store candles with the lid on or in their packaging; the scent within the candle will remain strong, even if you don't, but the scent on the wax surface could dissipate if exposed to the air for long periods.

Some Scents Are Naturally Stronger

Fragrance strength varies! Scents like cinnamon, vanilla, pumpkin, and eucalyptus tend to have powerful throws. Others, like green tea, cotton, or banana, are more subtle, even in nature.

Quick Review

Just because you can’t smell your candle doesn’t mean it’s not working. It could be:

  • Your nose is temporarily “blind” to the scent
  • The candle is too small for the space
  • Airflow is dispersing the fragrance too quickly
  • You’re using a subtler fragrance
